Quick answer

To talk about famous Italians, ask Chi è? (Who is it?) and answer with è + job, city and year: Andrea Bocelli è cantante. È di Lajatico. È del 1958. Use ha only for things a person has: Valentino Rossi ha il numero 46.

Step 1

Famous Italians: Chi è? The three sentences

Every famous person in this lesson gets the same three sentences. Learn the frame once, then just swap the words.

Chi è?

kee EH

Who is it? / Who is he? / Who is she?

Question

È cantante.

EH kahn-TAHN-teh

He / She is a singer. (No “a” in Italian!)

Job

È di Modena.

EH dee MOH-deh-nah

He / She is from Modena.

City

È del 1958.

EH dehl…

He / She was born in 1958. (literally: is of 1958)

Year

The frame:

Massimo Bottura è chef. È di Modena. È del 1962.

Jobs you’ll need: cantante (singer) · attore / attrice (actor / actress) · pilota (racer, driver) · nuotatrice (swimmer, woman) · chef (chef)

💡 In simple words

cantante is the same for a man and a woman: Bocelli è cantante. Pausini è cantante.

attore (aht-TOH-reh) is a man, attrice (aht-TREE-cheh) is a woman.

Famous Italians: a woman walking down a red carpet, chi è?
A star on the red carpet. Chi è?
Step 2

È del 1958: how to say a year

Build the year in pieces, then glue them into one long word. Italians write it as one word, but in speech it’s just pieces said fast.

1958, piece by piece

1000mille
+
900novecento
+
50cinquanta
+
8otto
=
1958🎂 È del…

1000 + 900 + 50 + 8

millenovecentocinquantotto

MEEL-leh-noh-veh-CHEN-toh-cheen-kwahn-TOHT-toh

Remember the rule from the numbers: before otto and uno, the ten drops its last vowel: cinquanta + otto = cinquantotto. Ottanta + otto = ottantotto.

After 2000: duemila (doo-eh-MEE-lah). Mille becomes mila in the plural: 2026 = duemilaventisei.

2000duemila
+
20venti
+
6sei
=
2026📅 duemilaventisei

Short version: in speech Italians often say just the end: È del ’58 (del cinquantotto).

Famous Italians lesson: a brown dog wearing a birthday hat in the grass, saying the year it was born

Party hat on. Sono del duemilaventi! (I was born in 2020!) Not famous yet. Working on it.

Step 4

È or ha? Who the person is vs what the person has

This is the big one. English speakers mix them up all the time.

È = who the person is

È cantante.

job

È di Modena.

city

È del 1962.

year of birth

È famoso.

description

Ha = what the person has

Ha il numero 46.

a number

Ha un ristorante.

a thing

Ha una medaglia d’oro.

a gold medal

Ha due figli.

children

Common mistakes English speakers make

Bocelli ha cantante. → Bocelli è cantante.

A job is who you are: è. Never “ha cantante”.

Bocelli è 1958. → Bocelli è del 1958.

The year needs del: “is of 1958”.

Sophia Loren è un attore. → Sophia Loren è attrice.

A woman is attrice. And no “un” before the job.

Pausini è famoso. → Pausini è famosa.

-o for a man, -a for a woman.

Famous Italians: a chef carefully plating a gourmet dish with tweezers, è chef, ha un ristorante
È chef. Ha un ristorante. Who he is, what he has.
Step 5

Famoso, famosa · Che bravo! Che brava!

Two words that change with the person: -o for a man, -a for a woman. Same as the nationalities.

famoso

fah-MOH-zoh

famous (man): Bocelli è famoso.

Man

famosa

fah-MOH-zah

famous (woman): Pausini è famosa.

Woman

Che bravo!

keh BRAH-voh

He’s so good! (about a man)

Man

Woman

Italians say Che bravo! / Che brava! about a singer, a cook, a student… and about you, when you speak Italian!
