A0 Unit 2 review: the Italian subject pronouns
No new content on this page. Just lessons 07 to 09, one picture at a time. First: who is who.

io
I
EE-oh

noi
we (me + others)
NOY

tu
you (one friend)
TOO

voi
you all
VOY

lui / lei
he / she
LOO-ee · LAY

loro
they
LOH-roh
Lei LAY · POLITE “YOU”
- One person you don’t know well: a waiter, a stranger, an older person.
- Written with a capital L.
- Same verb as lui / lei: Come sta? = How is he / she? and How are you? (polite)
No “it” in Italian
Animals and people are he or she. The dog is lui. The cat is lei.

Quick trick: add people up
💡 In simple words
Italians usually drop the pronoun. The verb already says who: Sono Anna. SOH-noh AHN-nah = I’m Anna.
Tu or Lei? Friend or waiter
Two ways to say “you”. Look at who is in front of you.

tu
Friendly · TOO
- 👫 friends
- 👨👩👧 family
- 🧒 kids
- 🎒 people your age, classmates

Lei
Polite · LAY
- 🍽️ waiters, shop assistants
- 👵 older people
- 🙋 strangers on the street
- 🏨 hotels, offices, doctors
Three key swaps
Also: E tu? → E Lei? · Come ti chiami? → Come si chiama? · Ti presento… → Le presento… · Ti piace? → Le piace?
💡 In simple words
Not sure? Use Lei. If an Italian says Diamoci del tu! dee-AH-moh-chee dehl TOO, switch to tu.
Italian numbers, from zero to 2026
Learn 0 to 10 and two small patterns. The rest is building blocks.
0 to 10
Purple border = say it slowly: double tt in quattro, ci = CH.
11 to 20: the pattern
11–16 · number + dici
The small number comes first.
undici · dodici · tredici · quattordici · quindici · sedici
17–19 · dici + number
It flips: ten comes first.
diciassette · diciotto · diciannove
20
A brand-new word.
venti VEHN-tee
Tens
Hundreds and thousands
A year, Italian style
2026
duemilaventisei
One long word. Same for 1958: millenovecentocinquantotto.

💡 In simple words
Quanti? Quante? KWAHN-tee · KWAHN-teh = How many? Quanti goes with masculine words, quante with feminine words: quanti caffè, quante pizze. And Italians count from the thumb 👍: two coffees = thumb + index finger.
Do you really know it, or did you just understand it?
Understanding feels good. Knowing is what works in Italy.
The self-test below is optional and untimed. All the sentences are new, so you can’t remember the answers: you have to know them.
