How to Pronounce GLI in Italian (Famiglia, Aglio, Figlio)

A0 · Pronunciation · GLI

Three letters, one soft sound, and no more “g-lee” at the family table.

Quick answer

How to pronounce GLI in Italian: GLI is one soft sound, like the lli in “million”: famiglia = fah-MEE-lyah, aglio = AH-lyoh. The G is not pronounced on its own. But GL + a, e, o, u is a normal hard G + L, like in English: globo (GLOH-boh), inglese (een-GLEH-zeh).

Step 1

How to pronounce GLI: the lli in million

You already know this sound. Say “million” slowly: MIL-lyun. That soft LY in the middle is Italian GLI.

Rule 7

GLI = one soft sound, like the lli in “million”.

The G is silent. The tongue stays flat and touches the roof of your mouth.

💡 In simple words

Don’t think “G + L + I”.

Think LY, soft and a little long: famiglia = fah-MEE-lyah.

million → famiglia

MIL-lyun → fah-MEE-lyah

brilliant → biglietto

BRIL-lyunt → bee-LYEHT-toh

Step 2

Everyday words with GLI

Say each one out loud. Every LY is the same soft sound.

famiglia

fah-MEE-lyah

family

figlio

FEE-lyoh

son

figlia

FEE-lyah

daughter

aglio

AH-lyoh

luglio

LOO-lyoh

biglietto

bee-LYEHT-toh

ticket

tagliatelle

tah-lyah-TEHL-leh

tagliatelle (pasta)

In famiglia, figlio, aglio the i is silent: GLI + a vowel is just LY + that vowel. Only in gli on its own (Step 3) do you hear “lyee”.

La famiglia = fah-MEE-lyah
Garlic bulbs: aglio, how to pronounce GLI
L’aglio = AH-lyoh
Step 3

The little word gli

Gli is also a tiny word you will see everywhere. It means “the”, with some plural words.

gli

LYEE

the (plural)

gli amici

lyee ah-MEE-chee

the friends

gli spaghetti

Gli amici = lyee ah-MEE-chee

For now, just learn to say it: one soft sound, LYEE. When to use it is a grammar lesson for later.

Step 4

GL + a, e, o, u: hard, like English

The soft sound happens only with GLI. With any other vowel, GL is G + L, exactly like in “glow” or “English”.

Hard GL

globo GLOH-boh · globe

inglese een-GLEH-zeh · English

gloria GLOH-ryah · glory

💡 In simple words

GL + i → soft LY: famiglia.

GL + a, e, o, u → hard G + L: globo, inglese.

Blue and brown desk globe: globo has a hard GL, unlike how to pronounce GLI
Il globo = GLOH-boh: hard GL

A few rare words keep GLI hard, like glicine (GLEE-chee-neh, wisteria). You won’t need them for a long time.

What a beautiful family!

Four GLI words in three lines. Same soft LY every time.

Common mistakes English speakers make

Talking about family: fah-MIG-lee-ah → fah-MEE-lyah

No hard G, no separate “lee”: one soft LY sound.

Ordering pasta: tag-lee-ah-TEL-ee → tah-lyah-TEHL-leh

GLI = LY, and the double L is held.

Buying a train ticket: big-LEE-et-toh → bee-LYEHT-toh

The G is silent inside GLI.

Saying “English”: een-LYEH-zeh → een-GLEH-zeh

GL + e is hard, like in English.

Step 6 · Did you know?

A sound English doesn’t spell

🔤 Three letters, one sound

English has the sound (million, brilliant) but no special spelling for it. Italian writes it GLI, Portuguese writes it LH.

🍝 On the menu

Tagliatelle come from tagliare, “to cut” (tah-LYAH-reh): long ribbons of pasta cut by hand. Same soft LY.
